2024 Winners

Makenzie Victoria Taylor, daughter of Chad and Kelly Taylor and a senior at Chapel Hill High School is the recipient of a $3000 Scholarship. Makenzie is ranked 6th in her graduating class and is a very busy young lady. She credits FFA for developing her leadership skills by participating in the Leadership Development Events, competing in Greenhand Skills, Greenhand Quiz and Senior Quiz. She also participated in the Career Development Events in the Forage competition and the Veterinary Science Contest. She has participated in the public Speaking events at Titus County Fair, State Fair of Texas, San Angelo Stock Show and Houston Livestock show, while also participating in the breeding heifer shows in each of the above mentioned Fairs and Stock Shows plus Fort Worth Stock Show and the Hereford State Show and National Show. Other organizations that Makenzie is involved with through school include:  Career and Technology Education Ambassador;  a part of the Well Student Advisory Committee; National Honor Society (through which she has participated in community service events such as the Senior Citizen Luncheon, produce drops at First Baptist Church, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, collecting supplies for the Rhyme Haven House and creating Valentine’s Day Cards for Cypress Basin Hospice); Early College Academy where after completing the program she will have her basic college classes completed at NTCC.  Her academic honors and accomplishments include: Level 1 State Floral Certification, Academic Blanket Award for FFA Livestock, Dual Credit American Literature and Elanco Veterinary Medical Applications Certification. 

Outside of school organizations, Makenzie is a member of Texas Junior Polled Hereford Association that she credits with helping her to step out of her comfort zone, perfecting her skills and talents in show cattle, giving her a passion for public speaking and helping her continue to improve and polish those speaking skills. The National Junior Hereford Association has broadened her horizons from state to national level and gave her the opportunity to attend their convention in Grand Island, Nebraska, which was the biggest show she had ever attended and a most meaningful experience.  The Texas Farm Bureau Student Success Series started her 8th grade year and she attended the last conference of the series in Waco, TX this past summer. Throughout this series she has learned about the free enterprise system, how to create, develop and sell a marketing plan, has had intensive media training, and learned how to become a better public speaker. She is grateful to her local Titus County Farm Bureau and Texas Farm Bureau for providing her with the wonderful opportunities to learn many life skills that will help her in future career endeavors.  

Makenzie’s Fair Participation started in 2nd grade when she competed in the Academic Rodeo Spelling Bee competition.  In 3rd grade she competed in the livestock show exhibiting a Simmental Heifer. She admits it was a little scary at first, but was excited to be Showing on her own and not just helping her older brother with his projects.  She also competed in Science Fair at the Academic Rodeo with “Dirty Pennies” and what substance worked best in turning them from dull to shiny. 4th grade she competed in the Fair Academic Rodeo Bible Reading contest and exhibited a picture of a Catahoula dog, placing 3rd. 5th grade she tested five different brands of stain remover on spaghetti sauce on jeans and placed 2nd with her red Simmental heifer, Dreamer. She also competed in Jr. Showmanship.  6th grade she entered her Coke bottle painting in the Art contest, placing 2nd and won Grand Champion Jr. Showman while showing her heifer. 7th grade she exhibited a Simmental heifer, placing 1st in class and competed in showmanship in Jr. Category. 8th grade due to Covid, the Titus County Fair was cancelled, but Titus County held a Youth Expo where she exhibited 2 Simmental heifers one winning overall Grand Champion heifer and she won Reserve Champion in Jr. Showmanship. Her 2nd heifer placed 1st in her Class. 9th grade she again exhibited 2 heifers Peaches placed 1st in her class and Rosie won Reserve Simmental heifer. She competed in heifer showmanship in the senior category. This year she competed in the floral design competition for the first time placing 11th with her triangular arrangement. 10th grade Makenzie competed in Public Speaking and made it to the final round. She placed 10th with her floral arrangement.  She exhibited two heifers with Alice, her Hereford placed 1st in her class and win Reserve British Division. Legacy, her Simmental, placed 2nd in her class.  She also exhibited a wether in the Market Sheep and “George” place 4th in his class and made the sale. She competed in the sheep showmanship competition and the breeding heifer showmanship. 11th grade Makenzie won Grand Champion in the Public Speaking competition with her speech on cattle hoof health. Her heifer, Ginger, placed 3rd in her class, her steer, Payback, won Reserve Champion in the market steer show and made the sale. She also competed in the heifer and steer showmanship competition and won Grand Champion Senior Showman in the Market Steer competition. 

This year Makenzie plans to compete in Public Speaking, Floral Design, Livestock Judging, Breeding Heifer Show and the Market Steer Show. She states, “I am ecstatic to participate in such a variety of competitive events for my senior year, and I am so grateful for the wonderful county fair that I have had the privilege of participating in since 2014. 

Makenzie plans to attend Texas A&M University-Commerce, TX and has applied for the Honors College program, pursuing an undergraduate degree in Animal Science. After obtaining that degree, she plans to attend Veterinary school in order to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine.


 

Tripp Phillips

Tripp Colton Phillips, Son of Charlotte and Stayce Phillips claimed the other $3000 Scholarship. Tripp is a Senior at Chapel Hill High School and has been a busy young man with all aspects of FFA, working odd jobs and improving his guitar playing and singing skills to the point of now getting paid to perform at local venues.

Tripp’s Titus County Fair Participation began in 2015 with his first Market Hog and won Grand Champion his very first time showing. He liked that so well that he exhibited two Market Hogs the next 3 years winning Grand Champion with one hog each of those years. He was on a roll and exhibited 3 more Market hogs the next two years, one being the year of Covid.  In 2021 Tripp Exhibited 2 heifers and 1 Market Steer, winning Champion Angus Heifer, Champion Hereford Heifer, Supreme Heifer, Champion Senior Showmanship and was awarded the Daily weight gain on his Market Steer. He had 2 heifers in 2022 with one winning Exotic Division Champion Heifer and also had a Market Steer that died one week before the show. In 2023 he again, exhibited two heifers bringing home the British Division Reserve Champion Heifer award. Exhibited 2 Market Steers, showed a Hanging Timber Light as an Ag Mechanics Project and participated in the Ag Speaking Contest. He plans to participate in the Ag Mechanics Show at this year’s Fair. Tripp has also showed cattle at the following livestock shows: State Fair of Texas, Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo, San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo (won Exotic Division Reserve Champion-10th grade), Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (participated in Jr. Commercial Steer Feeding & Management Program-10th grade), State Hereford Show and Louisiana State Fair.

Tripp has been very involved in FFA throughout High School. He was the Top Seller for Fruit and Meat Sales in 9th and 11th grade, received Outstanding Greenhand Award in 9th grade, attended Chapter and area Leadership Camps-9th, 10th & 11th grades, attended District convention last three years and competed in FFA Talent Competition last 2 years, attended Area VI last 3 years, Attended State FFA Convention last 3 years, competing in the Science Fair 9th & 10th grades-placing 3rd in his division the first year and received his Lone Star Farmer Degree last year. He played guitar in music ensemble for Fall & Spring Shows in 9th grade. 

His Community service includes playing guitar and singing at Senior Citizens Luncheon at our local fair & The Lodge Assisted Living Facility; participated in various projects for the elderly such as: making Valentine’s Cards, putting together Christmas baskets, collecting and distributing blankets, creating Christmas ornaments, purchasing and distributing poinsettias.  He also participates in Ag Education Day for students at local Fair and has participated in various Texas FFA fundraisers, collecting school supplies, backpacks, canned goods and seeds for those in need. Tripp is currently serving as Parliamentarian for Chapel Hill FFA as well as Chill on the Hill Co-Committee chairman and serving as Entrepreneurship SAE committee chairman for CHFFA. 

Tripp’s work experience includes:  Production Team Member at Cox Concrete Products, Show Barn Manager at Cox Ranch and Dog Food Department at Bronco Feed, all in Mt. Pleasant, TX.

After graduation,Tripp plans get to his American FFA Degree and attend Texas A&M University to obtain a degree in Agricultural Education.  Through teaching Ag he “plans to bring Ag back into the classroom which has been three generations removed. My Ag teacher, Jennifer Carter, has made a huge impact on my life. I plan to be the same for many students to come.”


 

Chloe Snodgrass

Chloe Jerene Snodgrass, daughter of Jason and Marie Snodgrass is the recipient of a $2000 Scholarship. Chloe is a senior at Chapel Hill High School ranking 8th in her graduating class, where she is a Distinguished  and a Dual Credit High School & NTCC  Student where she is a member of the Phi Theta Cappa Honors Program. Chloe is very involved in FFA where she is serving as President. Chloe participated in the Agricultural Advocacy Team in the Winona Invitational & also was on the 1st place team both her 9th and 10th grade years. She also participated on the Agricultural Advocacy Teams in District, Area VI and State, earning 6th overall her 9th grade year and 1st place team her 10th grade year. She was 1st place individual in Greenhand Creed Speaking at the District Level and also participated at the Area VI level her Freshman year. She participated in Senior Creed at Winona Invitational and District her 10th grade year and also attended the Paris District Convention as a Freshman and as a District Officer Inductee as a 10th grader. Other areas of involvement throughout high school, were Livestock judging, Public Speaking, Veterinary Science and Public Relations. She has attended various Leadership Camps as well as been a Facilitator and Interviewer.  

Other Activities include IDEA/Gifted and Talented (GT) Program the past 3 years, received Greenhand Degree by Chapel Hill FFA and attended a Texas Farm Bureau Workshop as a Freshman. She was Awarded Chapter Degree by CHFFA, received Floral Design 1 Certification, Vet Science Certification, & Magna-Wave Certification as a 10th grader and Lonestar Degree by Texas FFA as an 11th grader. She was also Inducted into the Chapel Hill NHS, awarded RYLA Scholarship & received Animal Science Certificate as an 11th grader.

Chloe plans to compete in the Livestock Judging Competition and participating in the Market Goat and Commercial Doe Show as well as the Market Lamb and Breeding Lamb show at this year’s Titus County Fair. 

After Graduation Chloe plans to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas pursuing a degree in their undergraduate Health Sciences program to continue into Medical School,  with a goal of earning a Doctorate in Pediatric Medicine to become a Pediatrician. 



Harley Stegall

Harley  Blayke Stegall, daughter of Joshua and Melinda Stegall, is the recipient of a $2000 Scholarship. Harley is a senior at Chapel Hill High School.  Over the past 6 years Harley has endured a variety of health issues ranging from brain surgery to total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation that saved her life. She faced over 400 hospital stays and the many visits in between; but she persevered.

 Harley is very involved in the Chapel Hill FFA Chapter, participating in many activities such as the Quiz Team Leadership Development Event in the Fall and the Forestry Career Development Event in the Spring. The chapter does a lot of community service such as blanket drives and can drives, in which Harley participates. She attends meetings, assists the officer team in any way possible and strives to help other members find their place within the organization. Although she has received many awards and honors through FFA, she rates receiving her State FFA Lone Star Farmer Degree and being the only person in her Chapter to receive the San Antonio Chairman Award as her greatest thus far. 

Outside of the Community service events through FFA, Harley focuses on one to help others. She, along with her family and friends, collect the tabs off soda cans to donate to three of the Ronald McDonald Houses where she stays during doctor visits. She is helping to make sure that others have a place to stay, free of charge while in the hospital or making doctor visits. Over the past 6 years she has donated over one million tabs. 

Harley’s Fair participation in the Titus County Fair began in 2015 when she was in 3rd grade. She competed in the Academic Rodeo Speech contest, as well as Ag Mechanics with the Nesting boxes she built. 

2016- She competed in Bible Scripture Reading; Ag Mechancs, placing 2nd in class with her wooden feed trough, and 2nd in class with her Market Lamb.

2017-She showed a pen of chickens

2018-She placed 2nd in class with her Turtle trap in Ag Mechanics and 3rd in class with her Market Hog 

2019-Unable to participate due to health concerns and doctors orders.

2020-in spite of the Fair being cancelled due to Covid, the Livestock Show went on and she placed 8th with her Rabbits and 1st in Ag Mechanics with her Cattle Rub Station.

2021- She won 1st in class in Ag Mechanics with her Purple wooden shop table.

2022- Received 1st in Class in Ag Mechanics with both her wooden work bench and Grand Champion with her portable feed buggy as well as the Air Gas Choice Award.

2023-She won 1st in Class, Grand Champion and Showmanship in Ag Mechanics with her Metal shop table with Attachments and Jib Crane.  Her 2nd project in Ag Mechanics, a portable cow crane placed 1st in class, Grand Champion and received Air Gas Choice Award. 

This year she plans to exhibit a 20 foot gravity tilt trailer and a metal feed trough with salt block holders as her Ag Mechanics projects. 

Under other interests and hobbies, in addition to collecting tabs, she enjoys making jewelry. She has made necklaces, bracelets and spoon rings. 

Harleys’s work experience includes working in an allergen friendly bakery, where she gets to work at Trade Days, Farmer Markets as well as taking and preparing weekly orders. She also babysits from time to time. 

Following graduation, Harley plans to attend NTCC for her Associates Degree, transferring to Texas Women’s University in Dallas. Her goal is to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development and Psychology as well as a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development. After this she would like to work and give back to the same hospital that saved her life.
